The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System seeks a physician (minimum 62.5% effort) to serve as Principal Investigator of their Center for Clinical Management Research (CCMR), a VA Health Services Research & Development Center of Excellence (http://www.hsrd.ann-arbor.med.va.gov/). The Principal Investigator is responsible for the overall administration and financial management of the CCMR, for providing assistance and leadership to CCMR faculty and staff on scientific and administrative matters, and for maintaining an active peer-reviewed research program. CHERP Philadelphia is currently seeking two statisticians. The senior position calls for a PhD-level social scientist or biostatistician to provide supervision and oversight of all CHERP biostatistical work. This includes supervising master’s level statisticians, working with investigators, preparation of analytical strategies, developing and monitoring realistic time lines for completion of analyses and reporting of results in various venues. (06/20/08) Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Health Services Research and Healthcare Quality Improvement - Madison, Wisconsin

The University of Wisconsin is offering a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in health services research and healthcare quality improvement funded by the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (http://www.pophealth.wisc.edu/HSR/traininggrant.htm). The objective of this training program is to produce independent investigators who have a strong interdisciplinary foundation in applied research settings, healthcare systems and quality improvement, and evaluation methods.

The trainees will:

  • Conduct research in their stated field of interest with a primary mentor
  • Prepare papers for publication in scholarly journals
  • Design a research proposal for possible external funding
  • Participate in seminars and attend formal courses as needed.

The program will provide an individualized Career Development Plan with activities geared to each scholar's career level, interests, and learning needs. Each plan will be formulated in collaboration with the scholar, the scholar's faculty mentors and the program directors. Trainees will be encouraged to develop a mentoring team with Program faculty from multiple disciplines (Medicine and Public Health, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Public Affairs).

Trainees can choose from a variety of research areas including:

  • Translating research into practice and policy
  • Patient safety and quality
  • Quality improvement
  • Patient-centered care
  • Payments, markets, and organization
  • Healthcare disparities
  • Large database methods

(06/12/08) Chief, Design & Analysis Program - Houston, TX

Job Description:

The Health Services Research Section in the Department of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and the Houston VA Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) Center of Excellence is seeking a researcher at mid-career (late Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level [tenure track]) with demonstrated supervisory leadership and management experience. This position will provide overall supervision and direction for the Center's Design and Analysis Program, which includes 11 PhD and masters level methodologists and analysts. The Chief of the Design and Analysis Program also fosters the professional development of program members, promotes funding stability for program members, serves as a liaison between program members and investigators, and participates on the Center's Leadership Team. In addition, this individual will work both as an independent researcher and as a collaborator on interdisciplinary teams of PhD and MD researchers, studying health services research. The Program Chief is also expected to contribute to the professional identity of the new BCM Quantitative Methods Department.

Requirements:

A doctoral level degree in health services research, statistics, psyochometrics, epidemiology, or a related field. Successful candidates must possess a broad and in-depth knowledge of methods in research design and analysis, as well as a solid history of scholarly achievement, grant funding as either co-investigator or principal investigator, and mentoring. (06/05/08) Core Investigator/ Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor - Seattle, WA

Northwest Health Services Research and Development Center of Excellence, Department of Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Healthcare System and the Department of Health Services, School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Washington are jointly recruiting one or more Core Investigators/Assistant, Associate, or Full Professors (regular or research) to pursue health services research. All positions are without tenure by reason of funding.

Successful applicants will contribute to health services research as part of a Center of Excellence with 25 MD and PhD investigators and over $8 million in VA and non-VA funding. Center goals are to perform state-of-the-art research, generate new knowledge and research methods, provide high caliber training in health services research, and assist VA policy makers in a rapidly changing health care environment. The Center's research objectives are to provide information to improve the delivery of health services to veterans and to contribute to scientific progress in the field of health services research in three emphasis areas: management of chronic disease in primary and specialty care, preservation of independence in older adults, and evaluation of alternative delivery systems.

Applicants must hold a PhD in health services research, social sciences, or related field. Applicants should

  1. have training and experience in health services research,
  2. exhibit potential for a distinguished record of scholarship, and
  3. demonstrate the ability to work in collaborative, interdisciplinary teams.

A research focus on one of three areas is preferred:

  1. care coordination, i.e., organization and management of patient care activities among participants (including the patient) to facilitate the appropriate delivery of health care services,
  2. development and evaluation of approaches to the care of chronically ill elderly including long term care, or
  3. psychometric methodology for scale development/validation and survey design/implementation. Successful applicants will be core investigators at the Northwest Health Services Research and Development Center of Excellence and eligible to apply for research funding from the extensive VA HSR&D research program as well as other funding sources.

Successful applicants may be jointly appointed to the regular or research faculty of the Department of Health Services with opportunities to work with faculty and graduate students at the University of Washington. (05/29/08) Physician-Investigator - East Orange, NJ

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Research and Development Program at VA New Jersey Health Care System, East Orange, New Jersey, is recruiting for a physician-health services researcher for the Center for Healthcare Knowledge Management of Complex Chronic Illness (CHEKOM) Research Enhancement Award Program (REAP). The REAP is located 15 miles west of Manhattan. CHEKOM consists of an interdisciplinary group of more than 15 core and affiliated researchers in the fields of medicine, social work, psychology, health economics, demography, public health, and statistics. CHEKOM is affiliated with University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School, and the Institute for Health, Rutgers University.

The Center's research program is focused in the area of complex chronic illness with three primary research strategic goals:

  1. effectiveness of care including pharmaco-epidemiology, intermediate outcomes, long term outcomes),
  2. linking quality and cost of healthcare (efficiency), including new methodologies, use of multiple systems of care, gaps in care for patients with multiple needs, and patient self representation of illness; and
  3. development/evaluation of care coordination programs (especially diabetes. mental health, and OIF/OEF veterans)


Candidates must have an MD and be board eligible/certified in a clinical field with experience in research, leadership, management, and administrative skills to assume a major role in a health services research program. He/she must also hold the scientific, research and academic credentials to qualify for an appointment at NJMS at the level of Associate or Full Professor. The position requires an individual with formal health services research training, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, track record in federally peer-reviewed grant support, strong publication record, and mentorship experience.

The New Jersey WRIISC is one of three national Department of Veterans Affairs' specialty centers focusing on post-deployment health in returning combat troops. The WRIISC is seeking a dynamic and energetic academic physician for the position of NJ WRIISC Director. This person should be an expert in the care of patients with medically unexplained fatigue and/or pain, and have a research portfolio of federally funded projects in this or a related area. WRIISC missions include clinical assessment of combat veterans that have returned from current and prior conflicts with medically unexplained symptoms such as chronic fatigue and widespread pain; education and risk communication for both veterans and health care providers; and research -- both clinical and health services oriented -- designed to understand the post-deployment health issues of these veterans and assure them a better quality of life.

(02/03/08) PhD Health Services Research Position - San Antonio, TX

The VERDICT Health Services Research Center at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (Audie L. Murphy Veterans Hospital) is currently seeking a PhD investigator to join its interdisciplinary team of clinician investigators and social scientists. The VERDICT is a VA-funded Research Award Enhancement Program that currently has 13 MD and PhD core investigators, 20 support/technical staff, and anticipates $2.6 million in VA and non-VA funding in FY 08. The VERDICT's mission is to improve the health of veterans by researching methods of improving the performance of clinical microsystems. Current areas of focus include: organizational effectiveness and change in health care settings, relational coordination and communication among health care teams (especially those in primary care and in ICU settings), chronic care management, coordination of care for complex patients with multimorbidity, and improving quality of care and outcomes for patients with diabetes, obesity, pneumonia, epilepsy, serious mental illness or PTSD, and polytrauma. The Audie L. Murphy Veterans Hospital was recently selected as the site of a $67 million polytrauma center to treat OEF/OIF veterans with multiple injuries. The new polytrauma center will be one of only five nationwide.

The Indianapolis Center of Excellence for Implementing Evidence Based Practice (COE) is currently seeking an experienced Biostatistician. As a member of the COE's Bio-statistical Team, the incumbent will plan and conduct complex statistical analyses for health services, epidemiologic and quality improvement research, conduct descriptive and graphical analyses, and summarize data for reports, manuscripts and grants. Experience should include linear/non-linear multivariate statistical models and repeated measures designs. Some experience with statistical sampling design issues required. Job Description:

The Division of Health Policy and Quality at the Houston Center for Quality of Care and Utilization Studies (HCQCUS), a Department of Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development Center of Excellence, and the Baylor College of Medicine, Section for Health Services Research are seeking to expand and strengthen our expertise in health economics. We are looking to fill a PhD level, tenure-track health economist position at the late Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level. Possibilities exist for adjunct or joint appointments at Rice University, The University of Texas School of Public Health, or Texas A&M University.

The health economist will work in interdisciplinary teams of PhD and MD researchers to conduct original research leading to publications in economics, health policy and health services research journals. The Houston VA Medical Center Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) Center of Excellence is accepting applications from recent doctoral degree graduates for a VA MD fellowship in health services research.

The goal of the fellowship is to develop independent health services research physician investigators. The fellow will receive didactic and experiential training in health care research concepts and methodology, and is expected to develop a research agenda and conduct a research project under the direction of a mentoring team in health care outcomes, quality, access, utilization, or cost. Research foci of the Center include: measuring the quality and outcomes of care in a variety of areas (liver cancer, dementia care, nursing home care, geriatrics, primary care, cardiology); exploring racial disparities in health care access and provision; analyzing utilization and costs of HIV-infected patients; incorporating patient preferences in treatment decisions; determining the effects of reimbursement mechanisms; and health services research measurement issues. The Center includes 14 physician investigators and 12 PhD investigators, representing the following disciplines: epidemiology, biostatistics, psychometrics, psychiatry, clinical psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, sociology, and economics. All investigators and fellows have positions in the Baylor College of Medicine Department of Medicine, Section of Health Services Research. Post-doctoral fellowship opportunities are available for psychologists, sociologists, epidemiologists, pharmacists, nurses, and other health services researchers, at the VA Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) Center for Research in the Implementation of Innovative Strategies in Practice (CRIISP), Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Fellows will join an interdisciplinary research team comprised of investigators from CRIISP, and the University of Iowa Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Business, and Liberal Arts and Sciences. Opportunities for collaboration are available on several ongoing health services and research projects including work examining translation of evidence based practices, patient adherence to medical treatment regimens, and telehealth and chronic disease management interventions. CRIISP was recently funded as a VA HSR&D Center of Excellence and provides a unique infrastructure and a supportive and exciting intellectual environment for fellows to develop into investigators with independent programs of funded research.

The funding period is for two years. Applicants should have recently completed their doctoral degree from an accredited program and internship or be eligible for VA research employment.
