Women's Health
The Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D) has a long term commitment to research that will improve the health care and health of women veterans. HSR&D’s Women’s Health portfolio focuses on research that will advance our understanding of the health care needs of women veterans and ensure the delivery of effective, equitable, quality health care to this important group of veterans at VA. HSR&D is interested in research that addresses the health care needs of women veterans, including those that are unique, more prevalent or different in women veterans or specific groups of women veterans, or specifically related to circumstances of military service. Of equal importance is research focused on: the delivery, organization, and systems of care for women veterans; gender-specific utilization of VA and non-VA health services; gender-specific issues related to access and barriers to care; quality of care, outcomes and costs of care; and other variables and factors associated with health care to women veterans, their special needs, and potential disparities in care. Research examining gender differences in health care needs, services, utilization, quality, preferences and satisfaction may also be useful for understanding and improving health care for women veterans. HSR&D is also interested in research leading to the development of innovative strategies and methods to expand the study of women veterans, a growing but still minority population within VA. Research should build on the current evidence and establish a foundation that will improve access to care, facilitate system changes, and enhance VA’s ability to meet the needs of women veterans. Women’s health is an HSR&D research priority, and is a component of the current HSR&D Research Priority Solicitation.
