VA HSR&D Postdoctoral Fellow Lauren Broyles Receives AMERSA New Investigator Award

Lauren Matukaitis Broyles, PhD, RN, an OAA Postdoctoral Fellow at the HSR&D Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion, will receive the 2010 New Investigator Award from the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse (AMERSA). The award is given to an AMERSA member who has made significant contributions to substance abuse education and/or research, and has demonstrated the potential for future achievements in the field.

Dr. Broyles' research interests address how to reach more inpatients early in their care at VA hospitals in order to more effectively address alcohol use or abuse. One of Dr. Broyles' current goals is to engage staff nurses in routinely talking with all patients about their drinking habits, provide a brief intervention, and refer Veterans who need more services. The nurses will also have the opportunity to educate patients about the connection between drinking and other risk factors for diabetes, heart disease, and injury.

The Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse (AMERSA) is multidisciplinary health professional faculty development program supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, whose membership is actively engaged in research related to substance abuse education, clinical service, and prevention.
