VA HSR&D's Leslie Hausmann Named Among 2014 VA Secretary's Diversity and Inclusion Excellence Awardees

Leslie R. M. Hausmann, Ph.D., a core investigator with VA HSR&D's Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, was selected as a recipient of the Secretary's 4th Annual Diversity and Inclusion Excellence Awards.

Dr. Hausmann, who will receive the award in the "non-supervisory employee" category, has promoted and embraced diversity in the VA workplace through mentoring junior faculty, as well as rising high school seniors from underrepresented minority groups. She also served as a founding member of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) Civility Initiative Committee, formed to promote civility and respect among VAPHS employees. In addition, Dr. Hausmann's research has focused on several key aspects of reducing disparities in VA, including: pilot testing a novel cultural competency training program to educate Patient Aligned Care Teams; understanding how patients' experience of perceived discrimination may affect their perceptions of care; and improving minority patient satisfaction.

The Secretary's award recognizes those individuals who have achieved outstanding results through leadership and innovation in the areas of VA workplace diversity and inclusion.
