HSR&D's Saul Weiner, MD Receives AAP PROSE Award

Listening for What Matters: Avoiding Contextual Errors in Health Care, by Saul J. Weiner, MD, and Alan Schwartz and published by Oxford University Press, has received the 2017 American Publishers Award (APA) for Professional & Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) for Excellence in Biological & Life Sciences. The Association of American Publishers present the APA PROSE awards annually in recognition of the very best in professional and scholarly publishing.

Dr. Weiner is Deputy Director of the HSR&D Center of Innovation for Complex Chronic Healthcare. His research focuses on issues of access to care, the impact of culture and ethnicity on self-report of health indicators, and on medical decision-making and the physician-patient relationship. Dr. Weiner has extensively examined the problem of "contextual errors" in physician decision-making, which occurs when providers overlook factors specific to patients' life circumstances that are essential to planning appropriate care.

In addition to Dr. Weiner's HSR&D-funded studies, he has also received support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Weiner is a Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics and Medical Education, and Vice Provost for Planning and Programs at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
