VA HSR&D's Mark Bauer, M.D., Receives Klerman Award

Mark Bauer, M.D.The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has named VA HSR&D investigator Mark Bauer, MD, as its 2011 Klerman Senior Investigator Award winner. Dr. Bauer is the Associate Director at the VA HSR&D Center for Organization, Leadership, and Management Research in Boston.

Dr. Bauer is being honored for his career-long contributions to mental health research. He and his colleagues published one of the first empirically-supported, self-care guides for those with bipolar disorder. The self-care model was widely tested in a range of clinical settings, and is being disseminated in VHA. Recently, he has been working on adapting and implementing this innovative care model in both public and private sector settings in the U.S.

In addition to his HSR&D work, Dr. Bauer is also an attending physician at the VA Boston Healthcare System and a professor of psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School. In 1990, he was the recipient of the DBSA's Klerman Young Investigator Award.

The DBSA is a leading, patient-directed organization focusing on depression and bipolar support. Dr. Bauer will be presented with the Klerman Award at the DBSA 2011 National Conference in May. The Klerman Awards honor Gerald L. Klerman, M.D., who conducted the first clinical trial showing the efficacy of medication and psychotherapy in preventing recurrent depression.
