Description: This session, Requesting Approval for Access to VA Data, is the second in VIReC’s FY17 Database & Methods series. In order to access VA data, researchers need to know whether projects are categorized by the VA as research, preparatory to research, or operations. This cyberseminar will explain how to distinguish between these three categories of data access. You will also learn the standard data request requirements for each category, and how and where to submit the correct data request for your project. About the Database & Methods Cyberseminar Series The VIReC Database & Methods Cyberseminar Series presents informational seminars to help VA researchers access and use VA databases for research. Sessions include information about: 1) Types of data and VA information systems; 2) Uses of VA data in past research and new applications; 3) Limitations of secondary data use in research; and 4) Resources to support researchers’ use of VA data. Objectives • Learn how to determine whether a project is categorized in the VA as research, preparatory to research or operations for data access purposes. • Understand the standard data request requirements for each category of research. • Learn how and where to submit the correct data request for your project.
