Event Title Spotlight on Pain Management
Event Description Opioid Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND): Preventing and Responding to an Opioid Overdose In an effort to prevent fatal and non-fatal opioid overdoses, VA recommends implementing Opioid Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND) to at risk Veterans. Naloxone is an antidote to opioid drugs, such as narcotic pain medications, and when administered during an opioid overdose can reduce the chance of death or brain and tissue damage due to lack of oxygen. OEND trains patients on proper naloxone administration technique and how to prevent, recognize, and respond to an opioid overdose. The objectives of this cyberseminar are to: • Provide a brief overview of OEND • Describes tools and resources available to facilitate OEND implementation (e.g., technical assistance, Pharmacy Benefits Management (PBM) Services “Naloxone Kit Initiative” that has the potential to provide up to 28,000 kits—paid for by PBM—to be dispensed to VA patients without the medical center incurring the cost of the kits [standard Veteran co-payment rules apply to the kits]). • Highlight the types of pain patients who may be at risk for overdose and who are prime candidates for OEND. Target audience: VA Research Community, Clinicians, and Leadership, particularly those with an interest in learning how OEND may help save Veterans’ lives.
