Comparison of PTSD Symptom Assessment Instruments

Prepared by Kimberly Raiford Wildes, DrPH, MA

Comparison of Instruments

In this section, a few psychometric properties of the instruments are examined. These include reported Factor analysis data, followed by Reliability data, which may consist of test-retest reliability, internal consistency, inter-rater reliability, and split-half reliability. Validity data in the rightmost column discusses correlation with other established measures of PTSD symtomatology.

Factors

Evidence of Reliability

Evidence of Validity

Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS)

D.D. Blake et al., 1990

*CFA indicated four factors as best fit.

Test-retest r=0.63 to 0.99; Inter-rater r=0.52 to 1.00; Internal consistency r=0.70 to 0.95.

Low to strong correlations with measures of similar constructs; strong correlation with the CAPS (criterion).

Impact of Event Scale (IES)

M. Horowitz et al., 1979

Various *CFA studies have indicated 2 factors, one general factor (G-factor) and 3 specific residual factors, and 4 factors.

Test-retest r=0.87.Internal consistency r=0.75 to 0.93; Across 23 studies, mean r=0.86 for Intrusion subscale and r=0.82 for Avoidance subscale; Split-half reliability r=0.86

Low to moderate correlations with measures of similar constructs; strong correlation with the CAPS (criterion).

Mississippi Scale for Combat-Related PTSD

T.M. Keane, 1988

Principal components with varimax rotation indicated 6 factors

Test-retest r=0.64 and 0.97;Internal consistency r=0.94; Split-half r=0.93

Low to strong correlations with measures of similar constructs; predictive of SCID-DSM-III-R diagnosis (criterion).

Mississippi Scale for PTSD - Civilian Version

T.M. Keane, 1988

*CFA indicated 4 first-order factors and 1 second-order factor.

Test-retest r=0.73 (raw), r=0.84 (corrected); Internal consistency r=0.74 to 0.89; Split-half r=0.80.

Low to moderate correlations with measures of similar constructs; low to moderate concurrent validity

Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS)

J.R.T. Davidson, 1997

Principal components indicated 2 factors and 6 factors

Test-retest r= 0.73, 0.86, and 0.93; Internal consistency r=0.99.

Low to strong correlations with measures of similar constructs; strong association with SCID-DSM-III-R diagnosis (criterion).

PTSD Checklist - Military (PCL-M)

F. Weathers, 1991

Principal components indicated 1 factor

Test-retest r= 0.96; Internal consistency r=0.96 and 0.96.

Moderate to strong correlations with measures of similar constructs; Low correlation with the CAPS (criterion); predictive of SCID-DSM-III-R diagnosis.

*confirmatory factor analysis
