Dr. Jason J. Saleem is a Research Scientist at the VA HSR&D Center of Excellence on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice (CIEBP) and Assistant Research Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI). He also holds appointments as Research Scientist at the Indiana University Center for Health Services and Outcomes Research and Regenstrief Institute.
Dr. Saleem specializes in human factors engineering. His current research involves application of human factors to enhance clinical information systems, including electronic decision support, as well as redesign of healthcare processes for improved safety. Jason is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA).
Since completing his doctorate in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech in 2003, with a specialization in Human Factors Engineering, he has spent most of his time as a VA research investigator at the Cincinnati and Indianapolis VA Medical Centers. His research in the VA has involved understanding barriers and facilitators to the use of computerized clinical reminders (Saleem et al., J Am Med Inform Assoc, 2005;12:438-47), enhancing clinical reminder design and integration into workflow (Saleem et al., J Am Med Inform Assoc, 2007;14:632-40), use of human factors methods to improve health IT (Saleem et al., AMIA Annu Symp Proc, 2007:640-4 and Saleem et al., Yearb Med Inform, 2009; In Press), and exploring the persistence of paper with the electronic health record (Saleem et al., Int J Med Inform, 2009; In Press).
In 2009, he was awarded the VA HSR&D Career Development Award (CDA). His CDA research focuses on understanding workarounds to VA health IT, their potential impact on patient safety, and design strategies to better support the needs of clinicians and improve patient safety.
