She has been recruited to join the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh Division of General Internal Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in September 2009. A social psychologist by training, Dr. Hausmann is the recipient of a VA HSR&D Career Development Award to advance her research program examining Veterans' perceptions of discrimination in the healthcare setting and how such perceptions affect Veterans' healthcare encounters and health-related outcomes. In the future, Dr. Hausmann plans to test and implement interventions that address perceived discrimination as a barrier to positive doctor-patient interactions and patient health behaviors.
Dr. Hausmann's mentors are Said Ibrahim, MD, MPH, and Bruce Ling, MD, MPH. Dr. Ibrahim is a former VA HSR&D career development awardee who is now a national leader in health equity research addressing issues such as racial disparities in joint replacement utilization. Dr. Ling has extensive experience in the study of doctor-patient communication and is currently leading a VA HSR&D study to improve doctor-patient communication about colorectal cancer screening and to increase screening rates.
