Deborah A. Fisher, MD, MHS is a Research Associate of the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care at the Durham VA, a Staff Physician at the Durham VA, and an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at Duke University. Dr. Fisher attended Vanderbilt University for both her undergraduate and medical school education. She completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Virginia and then came to Duke University Medical Center and the Durham VA Medical Centers for fellowships in gastroenterology and health services research. As part of her research training she earned a master's degree in clinical research from Duke University School of Medicine. She joined the VA as faculty July 2002. Dr. Fisher is the recipient of a Research Career Development Award from the VA Health Services Research and Development service.

Dr. Fisher's research agenda is to close the gap between guidelines and actual clinical practice for colorectal cancer prevention and detection. Recently, she has studied factors associated with access to care for patients with colorectal cancer, the process of follow-up care of patients who had been treated for colorectal cancer and predictors of colorectal cancer screening behavior. Her Research Career Development Award has and will continue to support her current work including examination of the follow-up of positive colorectal cancer screening tests, the validation of a self-report questionnaire for colorectal cancer screening tests and exploration of delay in colorectal cancer diagnosis.

Dr. Fisher's mentors are Dawn Provenzale, MD, MS, Robert Sandler, MD, MPH, and Morris Weinberger, PhD. Dr. Provenzale is has extensive experience in health services research of gastrointestinal malignancies and is a former VA HSR&D Research Development Awardee. Dr. Sandler is a nationally renowned leader in the epidemiology of colorectal neoplasia. Dr. Weinberger is currently a Senior Career Scientist at the Durham VA. His research seeks to design and evaluate interventions to improve the quality and outcomes of care for patients with chronic disease.
