Jennifer L. Strauss, PhD is a Health Scientist at the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care at the Durham VA, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center, and an Investigator with the Mid-Atlantic Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center. She completed her undergraduate degree at Emory University, completed her predoctoral clinical internship at Duke University Medical Center, and received her doctorate in clinical psychology from University of Miami in 2001. From 2001-2003, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in health services research at Duke University and the Durham VA Medical Centers as an AHRQ National Research Service Awardee. She joined the VA faculty in 2003 as a HSR&D Associate Investigator Awardee. In 2007 she received a HSR&D Research Career Development II award.
Dr. Strauss is specifically interested in developing transportable, self-management interventions for veterans with mental illness. She is currently conducting a randomized trial of a self-administered audio intervention for women veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to military sexual trauma. Dr. Strauss has previously demonstrated the feasibility of this intervention and shown strong effect sizes in an open pilot study. In the coming year, she also plans to extend this research to male and female veterans with combat-related PTSD.
Dr. Strauss's mentors are Eugene Z. Oddone, MD, MHSc; Morris Weinberger, PhD; Marvin Swartz, MD; and Jean C. Beckham, PhD. Dr. Oddone is the Director of the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care at the Durham VA. He has specific expertise in designing and testing health services interventions for veterans, particularly as implemented in a primary care setting. Dr. Weinberger is currently a Senior Career Scientist at the Durham VA and Director of the Interventions Core at the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care. His research seeks to design and evaluate interventions to improve the quality and outcome of care for patients with chronic disease. Dr. Swartz is Professor and Health of the Division of Social and Community Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center and Co-Director of the Duke Services Effectiveness Research Program. He is an internationally recognized mental health services investigator, with specific expertise in violence and victimization issues. Dr. Beckham is a Research Scientist and Staff Psychologist at the Durham VA. She brings extensive research and content expertise in PTSD to the mentoring team.
