BACKGROUND/RATIONALE:
The Research Career Scientist (RCS) program advances the VA research mission by supporting VA investigators who have distinguished themselves through scientific achievement, mentoring, collaboration, leadership, and service.

OBJECTIVE(S):
VA Research Career Scientists are expected to: conduct and publish scholarly research that impacts clinical practice or health policy; mentor junior VA researchers; collaborate with other investigators; and serve as a national resource for the broader research community.

METHODS:
Dr. Partin pursues the objectives of the RCS program by: (1) conducting VA relevant research in her area of interest (developing and evaluating interventions to promote best practices in the area of cancer prevention and control, with a particular emphasis on cancer screening behavior); (2) collaborating with other VA investigators with synergistic interests; (3) mentoring junior VA researchers; and (4) serving in various research leadership and service roles.

IMPACT:
Findings from one of Dr. Partin's completed IIRs examining determinants of timely colonoscopy following positive fecal occult blood test results were incorporated as recommendations for optimizing colorectal cancer screening in a Veterans Health Administration colorectal cancer screening directive. The prostate cancer screening patient education brochure Dr. Partin and her team developed in collaboration with operational partners in the VHA National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention has been broadly implemented in the VHA and received a National Mature Media Award.
