John McCarthy, PhD, MPH, is Director of the Serious Mental Illness Treatment Resource and Evaluation Center (SMITREC), a program evaluation center in the Office of Mental Health Operations. He has directed the VA’s National Primary Care – Mental Health Integration Evaluation since 2007. He is a long-time investigator at the VA HSR&D Center for Clinical Management Research, a VA Career Development Awardee (2005-2007), and Research Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan. He has years of research and evaluation experience regarding suicide risk among Veterans, integrated care, and assessment of access and quality of care for Veterans with mental illnesses. He has conducted over 30 VHA site visits, contributed to metric development and implementation, published over 90 papers, and made over 180 professional presentations. He earned his PhD, in Health Services Organization and Policy, from the University of Michigan, where he also received an MPH in health behavior and health education. Prior to graduate school, he worked for four years in hospital administration at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
