Dr. Voils is a Research Career Scientist in the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care at the Durham VA Medical Center, where she is the Director of the Durham VA Associated Health Postdoctoral Fellowship Program and the qualitative research core. She is also a Professor in the Division of General Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Voils received her PhD in experimental social psychology from the University of Kentucky in 2001. From 2002-2004, she was a postdoctoral fellow in HSR&D at the Durham VAMC. She was funded by a Merit Review Entry Program award from 2004-2007. Dr. Voils' research, which has been funded by HSR&D, NIH, and AHRQ, falls into three areas: (1) behavioral interventions for improving cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia ; (2) genomics health services research; and (3) methodology development. She was the PI of an HSR&D-funded trial to evaluate a spouse-assisted intervention for reducing patient cholesterol levels (IIR 05-273); a trial to evaluate the clinical utility of genetic testing for type 2 diabetes (IIR 09-039); and a trial to evaluate a weight loss maintenance intervention (IIR 11-040). She is currently the PI of a trial to evaluate the effectiveness of using patient-entered family health history information and decision support to improve risk-appropriate cancer screening rates (IIR 12-278). With NIH funding, Dr. Voils has developed methods for synthesizing qualitative and quantitative research findings and led the development of a self-reported medication nonadherence measure. In addition to conducting research, Dr. Voils mentors several postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty, including recipients of career development awards from HSR&D and NIH. Dr. Voils is a Fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine and a faculty member of the OBSSR/NIH Summer Institute on Randomized Clinical Trials Involving Behavioral Interventions.
