Dr. Jennifer Hornung Garvin is an Associate Professor in the University of Utah's Department of Biomedical Informatics, a VA Salt Lake City Health Care System (SLCVAHCS) Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center Affiliated Faculty, and a Core Research Investigator at the SLCVAHCS Informatics Decision Enhancement and Surveillance (IDEAS) Research Center. She has interests in the areas of automation of health care quality measurement using standards and informatics tools, such as natural language processing tools, and in health care standards, terminologies and classifications, improving the efficiency and quality of health care, secondary use of electronic health record data in clinical and health services research, use of techniques associated with Implementation Science to improve health care, and improving care of Veterans. Dr. Garvin is a Health Information Management (HIM) professional with 28 years of experience in HIM and applied informatics. Her service in informatics professional associations includes Director of the Board of AHIMA, President of state and local HIM associations, and Chair of the AMIA Evaluation Working Group. She is currently the Utah Health Information Management Association President and represents the VA and the Americas as an elected member of the Content Committee of the International Healthcare Terminology Standards Development Organization (IHTSDO).
