Dr. John Piette is a Senior VA Research Career Scientist developing and evaluating novel strategies for using mobile health technology to improve the accessibility and quality of chronic illness care, especially among Veterans and other vulnerable populations. He has been the PI on multiple randomized trials of disease management services for VA and non-VA patients with depression, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses, supported by patient-facing health information technologies, primarily automated telephone (IVR) assessment and behavior change calls. He currently is a PI or Co-I for three ongoing studies focused on using IVR to improve management and outcomes of Veterans with chronic pain. One of those studies will use artificial intelligence (reinforcement learning and data mining) to develop interventions that can automatically adapt to patients' unique needs. In addition he is a Professor of Public Health and Medicine at the University of Michigan, and Director of the UM Center for Managing Chronic Disease. His global health project focus on using mobile technology to improve patient monitoring and self-management support in vulnerable populations of Latin America.
