Description: Health information technology implementation and use occurs in a complex adaptive health care system and is prone to unintended consequences. This presentation will discuss the development and application of three frameworks developed by the authors to help understand and improve the safety and effectiveness of health information technology implementation and use. Several case studies and research findings will be discussed related to various aspects of safe technology, safe use of technology and use of technology to improve patient safety. Much of this work has implications for VA's forthcoming EHR implementation.
Objectives:
1- Apply 3 conceptual frameworks to understand safe and effective implementation and use of health IT
2- Describe how use of scientific frameworks can inform not just rigorous safety research but also research products, including tools, innovations, guides and related resources
3- Analyze implications of these frameworks in context of VA's forthcoming EHR implementation
