Description: Much like clinical service lines, VA Research depends on the electronic health record (EHR) to facilitate its work. Researchers use the EHR and the administrative and clinical data it collects to conduct clinical trials and studies of healthcare outcomes and quality and to inform evaluation and quality improvement initiatives supporting VHA program offices and clinical operations. As the VA’s EHR Modernization (EHRM) continues with the transition to the Cerner Millennium EHR, we are learning more about the challenges, opportunities, and changes that the transition will bring across the VA research enterprise. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of how VA researchers might interact with the new EHR and identify how researchers’ work may change and evolve with the new system. We will discuss implications for both research projects that use the EHR system itself and those that utilize data from the EHR and discuss steps that researchers can take to prepare for these changes.
Finally, we will discuss how EHRM fits into other enterprise-wide initiatives for VA research. Dr. Molly Klote, Director of the Office of Research Protections, Policy, and Education (ORPPE), and the Office of Research and Development (ORD) executive champion for the EHRM, will join the session to discuss how the transition fits into other enterprise-wide initiatives for VA research, including
1) Place of EHRM in overall ORD strategy for research enterprise
2) Role of ORD in supporting sites/researchers throughout EHRM process
