Andrew Guccione, HSR&D Deputy Director, Presents APTA McMillan Lecture

VA HSR&D Deputy Director Andrew Guccione, PT, PhD, DPT, FAPTA, presented the American Physical Therapy Association's (APTA) Mary McMillan Lecture at the APTA Annual Research Meeting on June 17, 2010.

The McMillan Award was established in honor of Mary McMillan, a dedicated pioneer in the field of physical therapy, and the founding President of APTA. This prestigious award acknowledges and honors an APTA member who has made a distinguished contribution to the profession, and provides the recipient with an opportunity to share his or her achievements and ideas with members through a lecture presented at the Association's annual conference.

Dr. Guccione's lecture, entitled "Destiny is Now" focuses on physical therapy's potential to reconstruct, restore, and preserve health. This capsule description offers an overview of the lecture's main theme:

Success does not come with a set of instructions. The profession that has emerged over 90 years is both true to the vision of our founders, and yet of its own creation. Each moment of time casts its unique perspective on our promise to the nation to reconstruct, restore, and preserve health. Will unanticipated opportunities catalyze our quest for a self-determined profession, or will the unintended consequences of our own choices dissipate the possibilities? The most critical step to take is always the next one before us.

Dr. Guccione's lecture will be published in Physical Therapy, appearing online in July and in print in November 2010.
