The Society of Behavioral Medicine has named VA HSR&D investigator Thomas K. Houston, MD, MPH as one of its 2010 Fellows. Dr. Houston is with the HSR&D Center of Excellence for Health Quality, Outcomes, and Economic Research (CHQOER), at the Bedford, Massachusetts VA Medical Center.
Dr. Houston joined CHQOER in 2009, contributing his research expertise in smoking-cessation and informatics to the Center's mission of patient-centered care, medication effectiveness, and patient safety. Prior to joining CHQOER, Dr. Houston was co-director of the HSR&D Research Enhancement Award Program (REAP) at the Birmingham VAMC.
The Society for Behavioral Medicine is multidisciplinary organization of clinicians, educators, and scientists dedicated to promoting the study of the interactions of behavior with biology and the environment, and the application of that knowledge to improve the health and well being of individuals, families, communities and populations.
SBM Fellows are recognized for their expertise in, contributions to, and advancement of the science of behavioral medicine. Among the considerations for nomination and inclusion are academic, professional, clinical, legislative, or other meritorious accomplishments. There are approximately 200 SBM Fellows, and they provide expertise in a particular research or clinical area, often serving as consultants and mentors for student and junior-level professionals. Dr. Houston has been chair of the SBM's Behavioral Informatics Special Interest Group for the past six years, and will be formally inducted as a Fellow in April 2010.
