Denise M. Hynes, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.N., director of the VA Information Resource Center (VIReC) and a Research Career Scientist at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, has just completed a one-year fellowship with The Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program at Drexel University College of Medicine.
Established in 1995, ELAM Fellowships are dedicated to preparing women for senior leadership roles in academic health science institutions. The ELAM fellowship encompasses executive education, personal leadership assessments and coaching, and networking and mentoring activities aimed at broadening perspectives, building new capacities, and encouraging professional connections. As a graduating fellow, Dr. Hynes joins a diverse community of more than 800 alumnae leaders that represent over 180 medical, dental, and public health schools from around the world.
In her eleven years as director of VIReC, Dr. Hynes has overseen the development of data knowledge management expertise and resources, development of a research data warehouse that integrates VA and Medicare data, creation of a database and informatics helpdesk and consultation service, and the establishment of educational programs in database methods and clinical informatics. Her research interests include: comparative effectiveness, economic burden of illness, health policy, quality of care for chronic disease management, and informatics approaches, especially the use of health information technology and clinical decision support systems to facilitate improvement in healthcare quality.
