Description: Designing decision support requires embedding elements to support both unconscious and conscious cognition. The work of these two presenters illustrates how a Dual Process perspective in identifying functional requirements can inform design and decision-making about antibiotic prescribing. Dr. Makoto Jones will present qualitative work illustrating how conscious and unconscious beliefs regarding framing and workflow may impact decision support design. Dr. Don Roosan will present quantitative observational work that explores the role of clinical complexity in infectious disease management. Because complexity may be a result of multiple competing implicit theories, identifying task complexity has practical implications for designing intuitive decision-support. Intended audience: Human factors scientists, clinicians, and administrators interested in antibiotic stewardship as a domain, also those interested in how technology and workflow engineering can influence how clinicians think.
