Survey Measures to Evaluate Specialty Care Coordination Within and Outside of VA

by Varsha Vimalananda, MD, MPH
Seminar date: 4/14/2020

Description: Coordination of specialty care is a challenge made even more complex in the context of the MISSION Act. Measures of success in coordination within and across settings must account for the different perspectives and values of the specialty care “triad” – patients, PCPs, and specialists. The coordination of specialty care surveys are internally valid and reliable measures that account for the three triad perspectives. These short surveys can be administered alone, embedded in other surveys, or used in parallel with each other in research and quality improvement efforts to coordinate specialty care. Dr. Vimalananda will describe development of the Coordination of Specialty Care surveys during her VA HSR&D CDA to date, present examples of the surveys’ application to measuring coordination and the effect of mechanisms to improve it within and outside of VA, and outline future research plans. Intended Audience: Researchers and managers within and outside of VA interested in measuring and improving coordination of specialty care.
