Description: Co-morbidity among deployment-related psychological disorders and military mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common in post 9/11 veteran populations, and appears to be associated with more severe presentation of psychiatric symptomatology and greater functional disability. This presentation will review results from a recent diffusion magnetic resonance imaging study that found that military mild TBI exacerbates associations between limbic system tissue microstructure and PTSD symptom severity, suggesting that TBI co-morbidity may increase sensitivity to trauma-related brain changes. Implications of these findings for future research and the treatment of PTSD will be briefly discussed. Intended Audience: Scientists, clinicians, and health system specialists interested in better understanding diverse psychological, functional, and neurological consequences of trauma-related co-morbidity.
