Suicide Prevention

Impact of Veterans’ Psychosocial Well-Being on their Suicidal Ideation during the Transition from Military to Civilian Life

by Claire Hoffmire, Ph.D. ; Dawne Vogt, PhD
Seminar date: 9/12/2022

Description: The initial period after military discharge may be a high-risk period for suicidal thoughts and behavior and is a critical time for prevention and early intervention efforts. The current study drew from a nationally representative sample of participants from the Veterans Metrics Initiative (TVMI) Study to examine the role of veterans’ initial post-separation psychosocial well-being in their risk for experiencing suicidal ideation during the first three years after leaving military service. Dr. Vogt will first describe the results of analyses that applied machine learning methods to examine the predictive value of veterans’ psychosocial well-being in explaining their risk for suicidal ideation. Then Dr. Hoffmire will summarize the results of analyses that explored the contribution of veterans’ psychosocial well-being, as compared to their mental health, to changes in suicidal ideation throughout the three years of this study.
