Spotlight on Pain Management

Pain Management Strategies, Associated Psychological Variables, and Outcomes in Critical Limb Ischemia: Opportunities for a Multidisciplinary Pain Management Program

by Kim Smolderen, PhD, FAHA, FACC
Seminar date: 9/6/2022

Description: A growing number of Americans – over 2 million – are affected by critical limb ischemia (CLI), the most severe expression of peripheral artery disease (PAD). The majority of patients survives the year following diagnosis and lives with chronic pain, but the burden of CLI pain, how it is managed, and its impact on clinical and psychological outcomes is poorly understood. This presentation will explore a roadmap to identify gaps in pain management strategies and interactions with CLI care, functioning, and outcomes that will help us to design and test care innovations directed towards “whole person” CLI pain management strategies, capable of improving patients’ quality of life.

Target Audience: This presentation is tailored to a multi-specialty audience, including clinical and research oriented trainees and faculty from a wide range of specialties including vascular medicine, vascular surgery, cardiology, podiatry, behavioral health, and others.
