EQUIPPED for Age-Friendly Prescribing in the Emergency Department

by George Jackson, PhD, MHA ; Elizabeth Vaughan, MD, MS
Seminar date: 3/2/2023

Description: The Enhancing Quality of Prescribing Practices for Older Veterans Discharged from the Emergency Department (EQUIPPED) project was initially established as an innovative quality improvement initiative designed to improve prescribing safety toward adults aged 65 years and older. The EQUIPPED program has three components aimed at influencing provider prescribing behavior: a) provider education; b) electronic clinical decision support via pharmacy order sets optimized for older adults at the point of prescribing; and c) academic detailing including audit and feedback and peer benchmarking. In order to inform the optimal EQUIPPED strategy for improving provider prescribing behavior toward older Veterans in ED, investigators conducted a cluster randomized trial in eight VA ED’s comparing EQUIPPED with active provider feedback including academic detailing to EQUIPPED with passive provider feedback using individual electronic reports via a clinical dashboard. This presentation will discuss lessons learned and outcomes from the EQUIPPED implementation trial.

Intended Audience: Clinicians, Health informaticists, Implementation Scientists, Quality Improvement Leads, and anyone interested in quality improvement or Emergency Department prescribing practices.
