Workshop Objectives:
VIReC, in collaboration with OI&T, the VISN Support Service Center (VSSC), and researchers at the San Antonio REAP, will introduce participants to a new national data source available for research, the Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW). The CDW includes vital signs and other clinical data from VA’s electronic health records known as VISTA/CPRS and is a potentially important and efficient clinical data source for research.
Participants in this workshop will:
1. Be knowledgeable about the layout and contents of the CDW, including relational and SAS formats,
2. Appreciate the potential uses of these data for research through presentation and discussion of management and research examples,
3. Understand how the CDW data compare to other VA data sources, and
4. Know the requirements and procedures for using the CDW in research.
HSR&D researchers who are currently exploring the utility of CDW Vitals data for an examination of variations in obesity care, predictors of variations in care, and impact of obesity care practices on patient-level outcomes, will discuss the different types of error inherent in height and weight data. Requirements and procedures for researchers seeking CDW access will be described.
Activities:
Workshop attendees will learn about the utility of the CDW for VA research through presentations and demonstrations of ongoing analyses. The audience will participate in describing their own experiences using data from this new source, suggesting how the data can be used for research and quality improvement in the VA.
Target Audience:
Health services researchers interested in using VA clinical and workload data.
Assumed Audience Familiarity with Topic:
No prior familiarity with CDW data will be assumed. Researchers with a basic understanding of VA’s data resources will benefit the most from this workshop.
