2034 — Improving General Medical Care for Veterans with Mental Illness

Workshop Objectives:
The purpose of Mental Health (MH) QUERI’s ‘SMI Health’ Workgroup is to promote wellness and improve general medical treatment and outcomes for Veterans with serious mental illness, with particular foci on preventive care and wellness, and disease and medication management. This Workshop will describe MH QUERI’s current activities and plans in the areas of a) improving cardiometabolic monitoring and management for Veterans taking antipsychotic medications, b) using kiosk-based patient self-assessment to support implementation of weight management at VA mental health clinics, and successful development of software to capture patient outcomes data from kiosks and make them available in VistA, and c) disseminating findings, tools, and successful implementation strategies to MH QUERI partners.

Activities:
This 90-minute workshop will consist of a) a 45-minute presentation by leaders of MH QUERI’s SMI Health Workgroup, followed by b) a 15-minute period for responses from discussants, and concluding with c) an interactive audience discussion of participants’ interests in conducting implementation research in this area, related VA programs or initiatives, and potential opportunities for clinical/research partnerships to maximize efficiency and enhance system impact.

Target Audience:
This workshop is aimed at researchers, program office leaders, clinicians and operations staff with an interest in improving general medical care for Veterans with mental illness.

Assumed Audience Familiarity with Topic:
No prior knowledge or familiarity with implementation science is required. The goal of the workshop is to stimulate a rich discussion among participants about opportunities for establishing and enhancing clinical/research partnerships to improve general medical care for Veterans with serious mental illness.
