This workshop will address implementation of VHA Handbook 1180.02, which provides guidance on assessment and prevention of pressure ulcers (PrUs) across VA settings and populations. Presenters will report on a range of VA clinical and research activities conducted by representatives from SCI QUERI, Tampa Patient Safety Center and Office of Nursing Services (ONS), and National QUERI Office. The overall objective is to improve care for VA patients with PrUs. Our specific focus will be: 1) to provide an overview of VA strategies for PrU prevention; and 2) to present examples of development, design, implementation, and evaluation efforts arising from collaborations between research (QUERI and Tampa Patient Safety Center) and operations (ONS, SCI&D) partners.
This workshop will consist of: (a) presentations by workshop participants describing their goals, and the activities each stakeholder group is working on related to PrU prevention. Presenters will focus on needs assessment, design and development, implementation, dissemination, and evaluation. This will be followed by: (b) interactive audience discussion about the successful tools, the role of key stakeholders, barriers and facilitators, and “lessons learned.”
This workshop is aimed at researchers, clinicians, and operations staff with interest in developing and/or using toolkits for improved quality of care in PrUs.
Assumed Audience Familiarity with Topic:
No prior knowledge of quality measurement or implementation science is required. The goal of this workshop is to highlight the issues involved in implementing initiatives to address PrUs in VA.
