2017 HSR&D/QUERI National Conference

3004 — Overview of the Availability and Use of the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model in VHA

Lead/Presenter: Michael Matheny
All Authors: Matheny ME (VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System) de Groot K (Edward Hines VA Hospital) Whooley MA (San Francisco VA Medical Center)

Workshop Objectives:
The objectives of this workshop are to highlight the collaborative work ongoing within the VA HSR&D Centers and research community to develop and leverage the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) common data model (CDM). The OMOP CDM is used in 11 countries, for over 600 million patients' data, and has been selected by the Precision Medicine Initiative as its core CDM. In this workshop, researchers will learn about the benefits of the OMOP CDM and efforts underway to transform data sources in the VA into the OMOP CDM, including the Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW), and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data, and Department of Defense data (through DaVINCI, a joint DoD/VA initiative). Researchers will be given a use case of how OMOP can be used within the observational cohort analytics space for health services research.

Activities:
First, VINCI will give an overview of the OMOP CDM and a summary of transformed data domains from the CDW and DoD, including NLP data, data quality efforts, and controlled vocabulary mapping augmentation work. Second, we will discuss VIReC's efforts to transform the CMS data into the OMOP CDM. Third, the Measurement Science QUERI will highlight a use case and quality assessment work that they have been doing on the OMOP data. We will discuss how these different OMOP data sets can be merged together quickly. Lastly, we will briefly describe some of the data visualizations and analytic tools available for use on the OMOP CDM.

Target Audience:
Investigators interested in using the OMOP CDM in their research, as well as project managers and staff interested in how the data are accessed and used, what data are available, and timelines for additional data availability.

Assumed Audience Familiarity with Topic:
Basic understanding of some of the data used for VA research. Detailed understanding of VA data is not required, nor is an established understanding of the OMOP CDM. An awareness of controlled vocabularies (ICD-9, LOINC, RxNorm, etc.) will be helpful but is not required.
