Call for Papers: Advancing Age-Friendly Health Systems for Veterans

July 21, 2026

Medical Care and VA Health Systems Research (HSR) are pleased to announce a call for papers for a Special Issue on Advancing Age-Friendly Health Systems for Veterans.

VA is a leader in the Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative, with over 500 sites recognized as Age-Friendly by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Nearly half of Veterans are aged 65 or older, with unique needs across the full spectrum of VA and community settings. Inspired by the VA State of the Art (SOTA) Conference on the Age-Friendly Health Systems Initiative held in 2025, this special issue will highlight research advancing Age-Friendly implementation across care settings and populations, and explore meaningful measures for assessing AFHS impact. Articles focused on VA and Veterans are strongly preferred, but others will be considered if clearly relevant to VA and Veterans. Articles should:

  • focus on advancing Age-Friendly care for Veterans through research, implementation, education, or clinical innovation
  • treat the 4Ms (Mobility, Mentation, Medications, and What Matters) as a set — if an article focuses on a single M, it should show relevance to all 4Ms
  • consider a focus on implementation, measurement, and effectiveness of AFHS within VA

Manuscripts may be submitted until December 15, 2026 via the Medical Care online portal. Authors are invited to submit Abstracts by September 15th ; while abstracts are not required, they are strongly encouraged, to allow for assessment of alignment prior to full submission. Abstracts can be submitted via email to Katharine Babcock (katharine.babcock@va.gov). Invitation to submit a full manuscript does not guarantee acceptance, which is dependent on peer and editorial review. Eligible manuscript types include original research articles, reviews, and commentaries.
