This portfolio addresses effective organization, analysis, management, and use of information in VA health care in support of clinical care, personal health management, public health, research, administration, and related policy. The purpose is to advance the use of health information and communications technology in patient care and clinical research, personal health management, public and population health, and translational science with the ultimate objective of improving veteran health.

Dr. Tanaka is the Scientific Program Manager for HSR&D’s informatics, data science, and genomic medicine research portfolios. Dr. Tanaka has spearheaded the Veteran Engagement in Research Workgroup and helped develop the Veteran Engagement Resource Center Toolkit. She also has organized the 2015 Natural Language Processing State of the Science Conference, and the 2016 Office of Research and Development Phenotyping Workshop, as well as several webinars devoted to informatics and Veteran engagement in research.
Prior to her VA appointment, Dr. Tanaka worked for the Behavioral Research Program of the US National Cancer Institute, the World Bank, and healthcare and global health consulting companies for more than 10 years. Since she joined VA, she has served as scientific review administrator for the informatics standing review panel, the special emphasis panel of the Learning Healthcare Initiative RFA applications, and the special emphasis panel for opioids and pain management. Dr. Tanaka also helped organized the Million Veteran Program Gamma-test RFA application review in 2017 and 2018.
Dr. Tanaka holds a Doctorate in Behavioral and Social Sciences from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a Master of Public Health from Oregon State University. She completed the VHA’s prestigious leadership program, the Health Care Leadership Development Program in 2017.
