Each COIN works closely with patient care services and operational partners throughout the VA healthcare system and the PRIME Center has promoted interdisciplinary, cross-institutional collaboration in their focus areas.
For research associated with the focus area of pain, the Center's primary partnership is with the National Pain Management, Opioid Safety and Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PMOP) Office. Additional key partners are the VA Office of Women's Health, as well as with the VA Integrated Health Coordinating Center, whose members serve as consultants and experts in pain and pain management on the VA's Whole Health Initiative rollout evaluation team.
Center investigators also support the research and dissemination mission of these partners by serving in leadership roles on the Pain Research Working Group and PMOP Committee (Drs. Edmond and Relyea).
The PRIME Center plays a central role in the Pain Management Collaboratory (PMC) pragmatic trials that are examining the use of non-pharmacological interventions in real world settings with funding from NIH, DoD and the VA. The Center serves as a partner to the PMC Coordinating Center and is the home to four PMC pragmatic trials. In these capacities, the Center and its investigators will broaden their network of collaborations as well as be involved in key definitions for future research such as harmonization of methods and definitions for pain research, identification of pain phenotypes, and refinement of technological methods for data collection and treatment delivery.
Drs. Heapy and Becker serve as multiple PIs for the Pain/Opioid CORE (COR 19-489). The Pain/Opioid CORE strives to enhance collaboration and accelerate health services research related to pain (especially nondrug interventions for chronic pain), opioid prescribing, and opioid use disorder. Together with our partners, the Pain/Opioid CORE promotes efforts to move research findings into wider use. https://pain-opioid-research.umn.edu/
Although Women's Health was added as a Center focus area in 2016, the Center has a strong relationship with VA Office of Women's Health. Dr. Bastian, PRIME's director, has a strong collaborative relationship with VA Office of Women's Health including collaborations on important women's health position papers, and several service-directed evaluations and research projects. Sally Haskell, MD, a Core Investigator at the Center, is also the Acting Director, VA Office of Women's Health. Both Drs. Bastian and Haskell, as well as other Center Investigators, provide regular contribution and leadership at VA Office of Women's Health meetings, national conferences calls, and work groups, and are also regular members of the VA Women's Health Research Consortium.
The Care Management and Social Work Services Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program (IPVAP) provides support to the IPV Center for Implementation, Research, and Evaluation (IPV-CIRE), an IPVAP Innovation Hub, located within the PRIME Center. The IPV-CIRE engages in program development, implementation and translational research, and program evaluation with significant impacts on VA clinical practice and policy. The IPV-CIRE also develops tools and products that provide the program office with data and metrics used to inform practice and policy across the healthcare system. Through the QUERI PRISM Initiative (Partnered Evaluation of Relationship Health Innovations and Services through Mixed Methods), the IPV-CIRE conducts a rigorous and robust partnered evaluation initiative to examine the implementation and impact of IPV screening across all VHA facilities and maintains a clinical dashboard that supports implementation of the IPV screening national rollout.
Additional partnerships include those in VA Central Office, as well as strong working regional relationships with research partners at the VISN 1 New England Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center; the Northeast Program Evaluation Center; the Clinical Epidemiology Research Center; and the National Center for PTSD.
