John D. Piette, PhD John D. Piette, PhD
VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System
Ann Arbor, MI

John Piette, PhD, MPH, is a Senior Research Career Scientist in the Ann Arbor Center for Clinical Management Research. He also is a Professor of Health Behavior/Health Equity in the University of Michigan (UM) School of Public Health and has a secondary appointment in the UM Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Piette directs the HSR&D PETALS program (Patient Engagement Tracking and Long-term Support) which assists HSR&D investigators and others in VA seeking to use text messaging, automated calls, and related communication channels for behavior change and patient-reported outcome assessment. Through PETALS and related projects, he frequently serves as a collaborator and mentor for VA CDA awardees and other investigators nationally. Dr. Piette's research focuses on developing and evaluating novel strategies for using patient-facing health technology to improve the accessibility and quality of care for patients with mood and anxiety disorders, chronic pain, substance use disorders, and medical illnesses. Recent work has demonstrated that combining artificial intelligence and mobile communication technology can increase access to personalized care with substantially less need for clinician time. In other research, Dr. Piette is developing scalable, safe opportunities for Veterans with mental illness to engage in purposeful volunteerism via videocam that improves their symptoms and sense of "mattering." Dr. Piette leads workshops and large scale program deployment efforts on brief behavioral interventions using cognitive behavioral approaches in the US and Latin America. He has twice been awarded a Fulbright grant from the US State Department for teaching and research on disease management and digital health in Latin America.
