Session Title Photosensitivity after Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): Mechanism, Diagnosis and Treatment
This Cyberseminar will focus on the prevalence of photosensitivity (photophobia) in TBI without headache and also its association with post-traumatic migraine after TBI. This will include the neuronal pathways involved in light perception and discomfort from light, methods of assessing this clinically and new diagnostic methods of objectively diagnosing photosensitivity, including the light induced electromyogram response of the orbicularis blinking muscles. New treatment approaches will also be discussed, including medical treatment with drugs, the use of blue-blocking lenses, miosis using topical pilocarpine and the use of occlusive contact lenses with artificial pupils to limit the amount of light activation. The intended audience is eye care specialists (ophthalmologists and optometrists) who are consulted for treatment of photosensitivity in the setting of post-TBI.
