Heather Gilmartin, PhD, NP

Heather Gilmartin, PhD, NP, a core investigator with the Seattle-Denver Center of Innovation, has received the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology’s (APIC) 2023 Distinguished Scientist Award

The APIC Distinguished Scientist Award recognizes clinician-researchers who demonstrate a serious and ongoing commitment to advancing the fields of infection prevention, epidemiology, and implementation science. Previous VA HSR&D recipients of this award include investigators Sanjay Saint, MD, and Sarah Krein, PhD, RN—both of the HSR&D Center for Clinical Management Research in Ann Arbor, MI—and Nadia Safdar, MD, PhD, Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development for VA Great Lakes Health Care System.

Dr. Gilmartin’s body of research focuses on understanding and optimizing the culture of healthcare to enhance employee engagement and patient safety. She was the recipient of a five-year VA Career Development Award in 2020, and has also conducted work on facilitating organizational learning through the implementation and dissemination of high-reliability practices, such as relational coordination, team training, and retention and resiliency.

Dr. Gilmartin is also the Director of the Relational Coordination in the VA Innovation Lab; an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Colorado School of Public Health— University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus; and the Associate Director of the Dissemination and Implementation Science Research Core at the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. She has over 20 years of clinical practice as a family nurse practitioner in areas such as acute care, family practice, infection prevention, epidemiology, and public health. Dr. Gilmartin is also serves as an executive leadership coach within the VA Leadership Coaching Cadre.
