Emerging Evidence on Eating Disorders Research: A Focus on Women Veterans

by Discussant: Joanna Dognin, PsyD ; Robin Masheb, PhD ; Karen Mitchell, PhD ; Discussant: Jennifer Strauss, PhD
Seminar date: 2/29/2024

Description: Eating disorders are deadly, debilitating, and impact individuals of all genders, races, ethnicities, and ages. Veterans are a population that may be particularly vulnerable to eating disorders given military weight and fitness requirements as well as the high rates of trauma experienced by Veterans. This cyberseminar will describe findings from two recent HSR&D-funded studies on eating disorders (ED). Dr. Karen Mitchell will provide ED prevalence data and service use/need among vulnerable subgroups of Veterans, including women. She will describe risk and protective factors for EDs, including military sexual trauma, combat trauma, and unit and family deployment support; and provide findings on an existing screening measure of EDs and assess screening preferences in a Veteran sample. Dr. Robin Masheb will describe findings from a recently completed randomized pragmatic trial on Binge Eating Disorder and high weight. She will share findings on the effectiveness of a brief Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) intervention for binge eating and mental health among weight-loss seeking Veterans. Drs. Jennifer Strauss and Joanna Dognin from the VA Office of Mental Health & Suicide Prevention (OMHSP) will discuss the implications on future research, policy, and practice.

Target Audience: VA and non-VA clinicians, researchers, administrators and policymakers
