Mission

The mission of REASON CORE is to facilitate and accelerate innovative SI research that is successfully translated and sustained into operational use.

Health SI is a vast field, spanning everything from foundational research to operational integration, with substantial investment across the VA, industry, and federal research agencies. REASON CORE's scope is focused on health SI that supports VHA clinical priorities and ORD research priorities and grounded in support of population health and clinical workflow needs. Our goal is to reduce cognitive burden, improve efficiency, strengthen clinical decision-making, and improve Veteran care.

Success requires close integration with research and operational SI work, along with facilitation of these activities across the enterprise. REASON CORE builds on current VA SI initiatives by expanding the community; synthesizing evidence; identifying effective approaches; coordinating key SI activities across VA; providing recommendations on implementation, policy, and research; identifying the state of the art; helping chart roadmaps to advance VA SI; and supporting ORD and partners with technical expertise and responses to requests for information. We also solicit, assess, and select innovative pilots that serve as exemplars for developing, evaluating, and implementing SI through research and operational partnerships.

Accomplishing these goals requires supporting, educating, connecting, and sharing with the VA community in ways that promote dialogue, critique, constructive direction, discovery, innovation, and inclusiveness. Within the context of the Learning Health System, REASON CORE can be conceptualized according to the outer circle of the figure below.

  2. Assemble, synthesize, assess, and disseminate evidence about SI and its impact.
  3. Facilitate processes and pathways for translation of SI from research to practice.
