Danil Makarov, MD, MHS, VETCARE COIN Co-Director
Dr. Makarov is a Urologist and a fellowship trained health services researcher whose work focuses on discovering and disseminating best practices to improve care for men with prostate cancer. He is PI of the VA HSR&D funded Veterans EquiTy in the Cancer CAre Continuum Research (VETCARE) Center of Innovation (COIN), PI of the Telehealth Research and Innovation for Veterans with Cancer (THRIVE) NCI-funded P50, along with several other studies funded by VA, NIH and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Dr. Makarov is author of over 140 papers, including first- or senior-authored publications in leading journals in cancer control, health services research, and implementation science. Dr. Makarov is Chief of the Urology Section at the Manhattan VA, Director of Surgical Research in the NYU Department of Population Health, co-Director of the Epidemiology and Cancer Control program of the NYU Cancer Center, and just recently started as co-Director of the VETCARE COIN.
Melanie Jay, MD, MSc, VETCARE COIN Co-Director
Dr. Jay is a General Internist and an investigator at VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. She is Professor of Medicine and Population Health at NYU School of Medicine and a national expert in obesity medicine with research experience in primary care interventions to address obesity, especially in vulnerable populations. Dr. Jay's health service research focuses on weight management and obesity-related disparities, especially in primary care settings, and she has received a VA Career Development Award, two Merit Awards, and two NIH R01 grants to develop, study, and implement obesity interventions in primary care. Dr. Jay has authored over 90 papers in obesity care, health services research, and health disparities. She is Director of Research Collaboration and Mentorship within NYU's Division of General Internal Medicine and has a K24 award from NHLBI focused on mentoring the next generation of researchers focused on excellence in obesity care. Dr. Jay is co-Director of the VETCARE COIN.
Scott Sherman, MD, MPH, VETCARE COIN Associate Director, VETCARE COIN Mentorship Core Co-Lead
Dr. Sherman is a Clinician Investigator and Internist in VA since 1991 and was on the executive leadership of CSHIIP COIN in Los Angeles until 2005, when he moved to the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. Dr. Sherman is a nationally renowned researcher and expert in health promotion and VA health services research, currently leading 5 federally funded clinical trials. He is Professor of Population Health, Medicine and Psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine. He has been continuously funded as PI of VA Merit Award grants for over 25 years. Dr. Sherman’s research focuses on redesigning healthcare systems to better help people quit smoking, particularly on population health studies examining the effectiveness of interventions in routine practice, as well as how to disseminate and implement them. His other area of focus is telehealth, and he is currently PI of the Virtual Care Consortium of Research, a national VA center representing the 200-300 VA investigators conducting research on or with virtual care. He is also PI of THRIVE, a national NCI-funded P50 Center, which is focused on assessing the impact, quality, and equity of delivering cancer care by telehealth within the VA. Dr. Sherman also started and co-directs the NYU CTSI Recruitment and Retention Core, which helps studies increase both the quantity and quality of recruitment. He has authored over 250 scientific papers. Dr. Sherman is Associate Director of the VETCARE COIN, and co-leads its Mentorship Core, working to recruit and train early career investigators.
Aasma Shaukat, MD, MPH, VETCARE COIN Mentorship Core Co-Lead
Dr. Shaukat is a Gastroenterologist and Director of Outcomes Research, Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at NYU School of Medicine. She is Chair of the VHA Gastroenterology Field Advisory Board. Her research aims to develop new tests for colon cancer screening and improving risk assessment for patients with a personal or family history of colon cancer. Dr. Shaukat has received numerous awards for her research and mentoring, including the Healio Woman Disruptor of the Year Award by the medical publisher, Healio Gastroenterology, and the MVP Scopy Award by the American College of Gastroenterology for colorectal cancer awareness efforts. Dr. Shaukat leads the VETCARE Research Scholars’ Program and co-leads the COIN’s Mentorship Core.
Erin Rogers, DrPH, VETCARE COIN Implementation Science Core Co-Lead
Dr. Rogers is an Associate Professor at the Department of Population Health, NYU School of Medicine. She directs a graduate course of study in Implementation Science, Chairs the Multilevel and Complex Interventions Action Group within the NCI Consortium for Cancer Implementation Science, and leads implementation science trainings and consultations for CTSI’s Community Engagement and Population Health Research Program. Dr. Rogers co-leads the VETCARE COIN’s Implementation Science Core, consulting investigators and trainees on the applications of implementation science approaches into VA research.
Daniel Becker, MD, MS, VETCARE COIN Implementation Science Core Co-Lead
Dr. Becker is an Oncologist at NYU School of Medicine, as well as at the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. He was awarded a VA Career Development Award for his mixed methods study of dissemination of and barriers to precision oncology. He also received a VA Merit Award for a multi-site implementation of a multilevel intervention to improve precision oncology, focused on rural and teleoncology sites. He is Chair of the VA Precision Oncology Program for Cancer of the Prostate (POPCaP) Health Services Research Committee. Dr. Becker co-leads the VETCARE COIN’s Implementation Science Core, providing guidance on implementation science frameworks and applications to inform research ideas and existing projects.
