Mission

Based at the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS), 3DI focuses on improving Veterans’ health by supporting research and training that advances patient-centered health behavior change.

Goals

The Center’s 25 investigators conduct research focused on improving Veteran outcomes through:

• identification and targeted screening for health-impairing behaviors (e.g., substance misuse, disordered eating, and insufficient sleep),
• engagement of Veterans in evidence-based care and self-management strategies, and
• implementation of innovative models of evidence-based care that facilitate behavior change.

3DI core investigators have programs of research focused on reducing disparities in mental healthcare; enhancing suicide prevention efforts; identifying gaps in care related to substance use treatment; improving the quality, safety, and value of care; and improving comprehensive chronic pain management and opioid reduction. Our investigators operate across multiple Health Systems Research domains (Behavioral Health; Whole Health/Population Health; Primary Care; Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health; Access/Virtual Care) and have expertise in all cross-cutting HSR methodologic areas.

Innovation

We are developing our expertise in using deep learning/machine learning to

promote innovation in VA healthcare delivery.
