Description: Abstract: In this talk, Dr. Cunningham will discuss the effect of public defenders in mental health courts. Using an instrumental variables approach, Dr. Cunningham and coauthors examine how being assigned a public defender rather than a private attorney affects recidivism and suicide attempts for justice-involved individuals. Target audience: Professional social scientists and social workers and therapists as well as people with a law background interested in mental healthcare and suicide, particularly in jails.
