Paul Barnett, PhD
Rebecca Brown, MD, MPH
Seminar date: 9/15/2015
Description: Dr. Brown will discuss the ability to perform basic daily activities such as bathing and dressing (“functional status”) is central to older adults’ quality of life and independence. However, these data are seldom systematically collected in electronic medical records. Many VA medical centers are now assessing functional status in Veterans aged 75 and older, and these data can potentially be used to improve care and research for older adults. However, the validity and accuracy of these data are unknown. This presentation will describe our work to identify and extract functional status data from VA data sources as part of an ongoing project to validate these data.
Dr. Barnett will discuss the national dataset generated by VA clinical reminders can be used to track changes in Veterans’ use of tobacco. This portion of the seminar will describe the tobacco health factors data, methods for interpreting these data, and data completeness. Results will presented from a research study that examined quit rates in current tobacco users and relapse rates in recent quitters, and how these vary by age, gender, region, and medical, psychiatric, and substance abuse comorbidities. The scope of other health status data in this national dataset will be characterized.
