Description: Assessing Outpatient Utilization Data in VA Research is the fifth cyberseminar in VIReC’s FY17 Database & Methods series. This presentation will introduce audience members to the organization and contents of two primary sources of VA outpatient utilization data, the Medical SAS (MedSAS) datasets and the Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW). Attendees will also learn how clinical and administrative outpatient data has been used in retrospective cohort studies conducted by VA researchers. After this lecture, audience members will be able to: • Understand the contents and organization of MedSAS and CDW data sources • Describe common constructs used in assessing outpatient utilization of healthcare services • Explain how VA outpatient utilization data has been used in previous research • Locate additional resources for working with VA data effectively
