Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Suicide in Veterans with Substance Use Disorders

Description: Veterans with substance use disorders (SUDs) are at clear elevated risk for suicide. Our research group is in the process of testing the efficacy of an evidence-based intervention to reduce suicide risk with Veterans in SUD treatment. This seminar will review the literature on the link between substance use and suicide as well as the cognitive-behavioral model for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. We will provide descriptions of techniques and strategies to specifically target suicidal thoughts and behaviors among those with SUDs. Intended audience: SUD clinicians, administrators and researchers with the desired outcome of improving skills for directly targeting suicide risk during SUD treatment.
