Description: This presentation will describe the Post Deployment Health Services - War Related Illness & Injury Study Center (PDHS-WRIISC) and its care for post-combat Veterans who have a very high prevalence of chronic pain. A typical case will be presented, followed by the pain assessment approaches that this program has developed. After addressing the complexity of pain symptoms, several pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches to pain management will be discussed. Mention will be made of exercise, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and a study of the benefits of yoga. Intended audience: VA health care providers who participate in the management of chronic pain, from primary care providers to pain-management specialists.
