Description: • 30-40% of Veterans report chronic pain, yet the impact of the costs of care in this cohort is not well described. In this presentation, we fit a series of frequency-severity cost models using different cost buckets including outpatient, inpatient, mental health, emergency department utilization, and primary care. We summarize these association of costs with calendar trends, Veteran level demographic traits, and the magnitude of site variation. The target audience of this presentation includes anyone interested in understanding how frequency-severity models can provide knowledge on both the frequency of costs events as well as the actual prices of these events.
