Detection of Elder Abuse Through Emergency Care Technicians (DETECT)

by Michael Cannell, PhD, MPH ; Julie Weitlauf, PhD
Seminar date: 10/9/2018

Description: This presentation, by Veteran and Scholar Dr. Brad Cannell will focus on the novel Detection of Elder Abuse Through Emergency Care Technicians (DETECT) program. Dr. Cannell’s research examines medics’ essential role in detecting maltreatment of older, community dwelling adults, medics’ perceived barriers to reporting suspected elder abuse, and the utility of a novel elder abuse screening tool that is based on systematic observation of patient behavior/environment, is easily embedded in the electronic medical record so that is automatically incorporated into the medic-patient encounter, and the impact of this tool on elder abuse reporting compliance among medics responding to 911 calls from community dwelling elders. Dr. Cannell, together with long time mentor, Dr. Weitlauf will discuss the complexities in research programs such as DETECT, that require novel clinical and methodological approaches, and the implications for productive interdisciplinary mentorship work in this regard. Intended Audience: CDA awardees, mentors, VACO leadership pertinent to this topic
